Here’s what to expect while pursuing a business degree

Candidates interested in business degrees have the option of pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a course like business administration. An undergraduate business administration degree can either be pursued as a general degree or as part of a concentration.

The coursework of most business degrees pans across topics in varying areas of business as well as the chosen area of specialization. Business degrees generally have programs that aim to prepare students to become entrepreneurs, managers, or occupy a position in a specialized field of business like accounting, marketing, or finance. The first two years of all business degrees are spent introducing the core business concepts and principles. Both bachelor’s and evidently master’s students often get to specialize in an area of their choice. These areas may range from economics, marketing, project management, finance, human resource management, accounting, international business, or information systems. For students who are not interested in specializing in either of these aforementioned programs also have the liberty to pursue a general business degree course.

Within a majority of business degrees, a common framework or coursework is followed. Some commonly explored concepts that are a part of any undergraduate business administration course include inventories and distribution, liabilities, ratio analysis, forecasting, capital, consumer behavior, and E-commerce. The core curriculum in a bachelor’s business degree program also includes accounting that is financial and managerial in nature, business statistics, financial management, marketing, and microeconomics. Additionally, many business degrees include communications, science, social studies, and mathematics as part of the curriculum.

Apart from the bachelor’s course that is highly academic and deals with fundamentals, students who go ahead with a specialization are required to take up at least five to six courses in the selected field. For instance, if a student interested in numbers take up a finance concentration, she/he will be required to complete a course in financial statement analysis, investments, and real estate. Similarly, a student with a concentrated course on information system will need to undergo complete courses in fields like networking, application development, and information technology project management. In addition to the academic obligations, a business student is also bound to complete an internship and a thesis as a part of the curriculum.
