How to treat hives?

Medically known as urticaria, hives are red swellings on the skin, appearing in different shapes and sizes. These itchy patches do not last longer than six to twelve hours. Hives are a common skin irritation and the causes of this issue are often vague and differ from person to person. These can rapidly change its size and disappear from one part of the skin and appear on another, within a matter of few hours. One of the main causes of hives is considered as the reaction of the body to certain allergens. These reactions are a result of an unknown condition and therefore it is vague.

What are the ways in which hives can be treated?
First and foremost, it is essential to know the cause of the issue. Sometimes, there might be a case of hives that is a result of the allergic reaction and if the person suffering doesn’t know the cause then the treatment can’t be taken further. Hence, it is crucial to find out the cause. Once, the cause of the problem is known, then try to avoid the trigger. Some of the mild cases of hives do disappear after a few hours but if the red and itchy patches continue to grow, then it is better to consider a dermatologist right away.

There are some home remedies too that controls or suppresses the swelling of the skin caused by hives. Some dermatologists also recommend having cold water bath as cold blocks further histamine release that causes hives. In order to be relieved of itchiness, one can apply dermatologist recommended skin creams.

It is also said that stress can cause hives to become worse at times. A person can tame his or her tension by meditating or practicing yoga and progressive relaxation. As there is no particular reason for the cause of hives, one can always prevent it by keeping a track of food intake and what the person is allergic to. Some people are allergic to shellfish, peanuts, eggs, berries, milk, and marshmallows, to name a few. There are other who react to food preservatives and can’t have canned food or beverages. When there are no skin irritation or uncomfortableness, hives can be harmless as they disappear within hours. But if the swelling is for a day or so, then it is best to consult your dermatologist for immediate medical treatment where there are prescribed drugs as per the respective condition.
